The chemical crisis in Garden Grove (Orange County, California) has escalated significantly. A commercial industrial tank at the GKN Aerospace facility has suffered a severe chemical malfunction that has triggered massive, multi-city evacuations.
What began on Thursday, May 21, as a localized incident has expanded into a complex emergency, forcing fire officials to warn that the tank is “actively in crisis” with a high threat of a catastrophic rupture or explosion.
The Core Situation: Thermal Runaway at GKN Aerospace
The emergency centers around a massive pressurized storage tank containing roughly 6,000 to 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate (MMA)—a highly volatile, flammable chemical liquid used to manufacture aerospace plastics, resins, and military aircraft canopies.
The tank began overheating on May 21 and entered a state of thermal runaway—a dangerous chemical phenomenon where the substance generates its own uncontrollable heat, building internal pressure exponentially.
Despite non-stop efforts by the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) to cool the exterior with water streams, emergency officials confirmed that the internal temperature has climbed to 90°F and is rising by about 1°F per hour.
The Two Critical Risks
OCFA Division Chief Craig Covey stated plainly that the system is failing and they are racing to prevent one of two catastrophic outcomes:
-
A Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion (BLEVE): If the pressure causes the tank to rupture violently, it will create a massive fireball, causing severe structural blast damage to dozens of nearby homes and businesses.
-
A Toxic Chemical Spill: If the tank cracks or fails without exploding, thousands of gallons of toxic liquid will spill. While sandbag barriers have been erected, a spill threatens to overwhelm containment and leak into local storm drains, creeks, or the ocean.
Mandatory Evacuations & Blast Radius Zones
Because of the potential blast radius and toxic fumes, evacuation orders have been expanded dramatically across six different Orange County cities, displacing an estimated 40,000 to 44,000 residents.
The current evacuation zone heavily impacts portions of Garden Grove, Anaheim, Buena Park, Cypress, Stanton, and Westminster (specifically north of Garden Grove Blvd, east of Springdale Ave, west of Dale St, and south of Orangewood Ave). Notably, Disneyland’s nearby theme parks in Anaheim are not currently under evacuation orders.
The Threat Zones
According to the blast radius map released by emergency management:
-
Severe Damage Zone: Within roughly 1,100 feet of the GKN facility (complete structural destruction).
-
Moderate Damage Zone: Up to 0.3 miles from the tank.
-
Light Damage Zone: Extending up to nearly half a mile (0.4 miles) away.
Health Risks of Methyl Methacrylate (MMA)
Orange County chief healthcare officer Dr. Regina Chinsio-Kwong has urged everyone in the surrounding areas to follow evacuation orders due to the severe health risks associated with MMA vapors.
While air quality monitors have remained mostly normal so far, any concentrated venting or leakage of the vapor can cause:
-
Acute respiratory issues and severe coughing
-
Itching, tearing, and burning of the eyes
-
Intense nausea, dizziness, and headaches
Active Evacuation Shelters
If you or someone you know has been displaced by the evacuation orders, the American Red Cross and local municipalities have set up congregate dormitory shelters. Displaced residents are advised to bring their essential medications and emergency documents.
Active shelters include:
-
Golden West College (Gymnasium) – 15744 Goldenwest St, Huntington Beach
-
La Palma Community Center – La Palma
-
Cypress Community Center – Cypress
-
Fonthill Valley & Anaheim designated regional hubs
