Vijay Takes On DMK in Tamil Nadu Assembly, Cites ED Documents and Alleges ‘Party Fund’ Corruption

Chennai, September 7, 2026: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay launched a major political attack on the opposition DMK in the state Assembly on Monday, accusing the party of systematic corruption during its previous tenure and citing documents he said were connected to the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

The speech triggered a heated confrontation inside the Assembly, with DMK legislators protesting Vijay’s allegations before eventually walking out of the House.

Vijay’s remarks centred on allegations that contractors working on government projects were required to provide money described as “party funds.” According to Vijay’s reading of an ED document, the alleged payments ranged from 7.5% to 10% of individual contract values.

He argued that the payments were allegedly collected in instalments, comparing the arrangement to paying an EMI on a loan.

Vijay Cites ED Document in Assembly

During the debate, Vijay said the evidence supporting his allegations was contained in an Enforcement Directorate document.

He alleged that the document referred to contractors working with the Municipal Administration and Water Supply department and described money being collected in the name of party funds.

Vijay further claimed that the document named M.K. Stalin, Udhayanidhi Stalin and other political figures as alleged beneficiaries.

It is important to note that these claims were made by Vijay while presenting his interpretation of the document. The allegations themselves have not been established as convictions, and the reporting reviewed does not show that the Assembly proceedings independently proved the accusations.

The allegations have nevertheless intensified the political confrontation between Vijay’s government and the DMK.

DMK Members Protest and Walk Out

Vijay’s speech led to an immediate reaction from DMK legislators.

According to reports from the Assembly, DMK members raised slogans and moved toward the Speaker’s area as the Chief Minister continued his attack.

The confrontation eventually resulted in a walkout by DMK members after the Speaker did not allow the Leader of the Opposition to respond at that point in the proceedings.

The scenes added to an increasingly confrontational relationship between the ruling TVK government and the DMK opposition.

Vijay Brings Up the Sarkaria Commission

Vijay did not limit his criticism to recent allegations.

He also referred to the Sarkaria Commission of Inquiry, established in the 1970s to investigate allegations against the then DMK government.

While speaking about the Veeranam drinking-water project, Vijay referred to allegations recorded in the historical inquiry concerning commissions and the awarding of contracts.

He used the historical material to argue that allegations of corruption surrounding the DMK were not limited to its most recent period in government.

The reference was politically significant because Vijay was attempting to connect allegations from the 1970s with the corruption accusations he raised against the more recent DMK administration.

Attack on the DMK’s Political Image

Vijay also challenged the DMK’s long-standing political image and accused the party of maintaining a reputation for clean governance despite what he described as repeated allegations of corruption.

He argued that his government had a responsibility to place information before the public when documents or allegations were relevant to the functioning of the previous administration.

The Chief Minister said his government would not discriminate when allegations involved members of his own political organisation either.

He claimed that cases had been registered against TVK functionaries where allegations warranted action, arguing that his administration was prepared to take action regardless of political affiliation.

Vijay Also Addresses Political Attacks on Women

The Assembly speech also moved beyond corruption.

Vijay strongly criticised what he described as increasingly abusive political rhetoric, particularly comments targeting women.

He said freedom of expression should not be used as an excuse for personal attacks or degrading remarks against women.

His remarks came amid a separate political controversy involving comments attributed to DMK leaders concerning actress Trisha.

Vijay warned that political disagreements should not descend into personal abuse and said politicians needed to maintain basic standards of dignity and public conduct.

Dispute Over Welfare Schemes and Cancelled Projects

The Chief Minister also criticised the previous DMK administration over several welfare programmes and infrastructure projects.

Vijay alleged that a number of schemes implemented under previous governments were discontinued after the DMK returned to power in 2021.

Among the programmes he referred to were the Thalikku Thangam scheme, Amma Two-Wheeler Scheme, free goats and cows programme and Amma Mini Clinics.

He also criticised the handling of the free laptop programme, arguing that it was discontinued for several years before being revived later.

Vijay further claimed that several infrastructure projects approved or initiated by the earlier government were subsequently cancelled.

He cited projects in Villupuram district as examples, including a proposed desalination project and a fishing harbour project.

Vijay Challenges DMK on Law and Order

Another major part of the Chief Minister’s speech concerned policing and law and order.

Vijay criticised the opposition for questioning his government’s handling of the police department while accusing the previous DMK government of failing to adequately address issues involving drugs, women’s safety and crime.

He argued that the opposition should also examine its own record before criticising the present administration.

The Chief Minister said his government was attempting to address problems that had accumulated over several years and asked the public to judge the administration on its actions.

A New Phase in Vijay vs DMK Politics?

Monday’s confrontation could become an important moment in Tamil Nadu’s evolving political landscape.

Vijay, who entered electoral politics after building a major career in Tamil cinema, has increasingly positioned his government against the established political order represented by parties such as the DMK.

His decision to use the Assembly floor to directly challenge the DMK over corruption allegations signals a more aggressive political strategy.

The DMK, meanwhile, has rejected Vijay’s political attacks and accused him of using allegations and Assembly proceedings for political purposes. The opposition’s walkout demonstrated how sharply relations between the two sides have deteriorated.

Allegations Still Need to Be Established

Despite the intensity of the debate, the corruption allegations made during Monday’s Assembly proceedings should not be confused with judicial findings.

Vijay cited an ED document and historical inquiry material to support his political accusations, but the allegations involving individual politicians remain allegations unless established through the appropriate legal process.

For now, the confrontation has added another major chapter to the increasingly bitter political battle between Vijay’s government and the DMK.

With the Assembly becoming the latest arena for the dispute, further political and legal developments are likely to follow as both sides attempt to defend their records and convince Tamil Nadu voters that their version of events is the credible one.
